Very strong early reviews, although the band usually does well with critics, so not sure if that's indicative of anything : https://www.albumoftheyear.org/album/1383369-deftones-private-music.php

Guess it's time to pre-order the album. Haven't listened to music via headphones for over 8 months, and I'd like for my first listen to be via the physical copy anyway

I actually got the photobook edition back when the album was first announced, but I don't know when it will actually arrive

    EDIT:

    Ouch @minuteforce ... :/

Haven't heard it yet. But curiosity made me check the reception, which seems to be great.

I dunno though. Seems like there is a semi consensus online about how Gore was a "weaker" album, and even lots of lukewarm comments about ohms. And those two are some of my favourite post White Poney projects of the band, especially ohms  I liked how they ventured into new sounds and atmosphere on those ones.

Soooo ... If everybody loves this new one, I may end up on the lukewarm camp. We'll see ahah

People are mostly happy with it, from what I've seen. I've listened through it and my favourites right now are "cXz" and "milk of the madonna" (which I knew would be one of them)

So I know those "Deftones discography review" have been kind of a popular thing to do, but I am rarely in line with them, especially those who put Adrenaline over any of their latest records.

Which leads me to this article, which I found a fun read : https://www.treblezine.com/deftones-album-guide-celebrate-catalog/

Pretty much another ranking amidst the forest of them, but for once one I found more streamlined with my own opinions  Well almost : SNW with a score higher than S/T - Gore - ohms itches a bit, but okay, I guess I could see a point. That record is indeed quite the dark horse.

Planning to go through they whole discography again before listening to the new one, may have fun dropping a ranking afterwards, will see.

So the photobook arrived, at the beginning of Sept instead of at the end like the email suggested. I'll probably open it tomorrow and leaf through it

Loving Private Music. Ranking could be fun.

    I guess....

Around the Fur > Koi No Yokan > Private Music > White Pony > Diamond Eyes > Saturday Night Wrist > Gore > Deftones > Adrenaline

Not including Ohms 'cause I never properly got into that album, maybe I'll listen again one of these days. I've fallen a bit out of love with White Pony, maybe overplayed it a little when I first discovered it. Private Music is ranking high partially 'cause it's new, of course.

I might get the vinyl... I love that shade of green on the cover.

I've definitely come to prefer ATF over White Pony over the past few years. My top favourite will always be SNW, the album which really got me into the band. A lot of what came after hasn't had the same staying power for me

Would happily read the feedback if you give the record another chance!

I was recently surprised to see how lukewarm online opinions are towards ohms, as I remember the reception being vastly positive around release time - well, except that unfamous fantano review. Tried to dive into what exactly prevents this album from being a fan favorite, but couldn't identify a clear answer. I've read a few times the album is more centered around atmosphere than robust songs, that it was a bit too dark, that it didn't have compelling melodies - not sure what to think of it.

Personally, I remember being absolutely in love with the dystopian atmosphere of "ohms", but I though the songwriting was pretty stellar as well. Great riffs (Urantia, Ohms, Headless), heavy and/or ehtereal progressive goodness (The Spell of Mathematics, Pompeji), urgency (This Link Is Dead), catchiness (Ceremony), it had a bit of everything.

Also, still haven't heard Private Music, damn ordering taking a while to arrive, and I'm for some reason adamant about listening to the physical copy first this time

I won't speak more on private music, then, but, for me, Gore and Ohms aren't that distinct from one another and don't really stand out

    First impressions:
    • Got to be their most shoegazy album or close
    • I feel there are segments of songs here and there that sounds more like 2000-2003 Deftones that anything the band has written since then
Strong, consistent album, although no specific song catched my attention more than others. Sounds like a record that will definitely grow on me with further listens, but it's solid for sure.
