    Linkin Park
continues north through the Pacific Northwest for the next stop on the From Zero World Tour—a performance in Vancouver, British Columbia. The band’s performance in Vancouver will close out their performances in Canada for this year and likely the From Zero cycle, following on from their double nights in Montréal and night in Toronto last month.

This will be the band’s first time in Vancouver in well over decade, with their last time there being in 2012. They will return to the same venue where they last performed for that show, taking the stage at Rogers Arena in Downtown Vancouver tomorrow night. Vancouver has a fairly limited history with the band overall, despite being the third largest metropolitan area in Canada, with this only being the band’s fourth visit to the city and British Columbia.

Linkin Park’s history in Vancouver has been across three distinct eras. The city was introduced to Linkin Park’s live production during the Hybrid Theory era, as a one-off date at Vancouver’s Orpheum theater following the Family Values Tour. After the mid-November conclusion of the Family Values Tour in Tacoma, Washington, the band played one-off dates in Vancouver and Bakersfield, California, before starting the Countdown to Revolution Tour later that month.

While Vancouver’s 2001 setlist is technically unknown, it is known that the band played a full fourteen-song setlist in Bakersfield. That setlist included every Hybrid Theory track barring “Cure for the Itch,” alongside “Step Up,” “High Voltage,” and a new full-band rendition of “My December” featuring Phoenix on cello. In addition to those songs, the band included two live interludes: a DJ interlude by Joe Hahn and an abbreviated cover of “Sweet Child o’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses. Given that both Bakersfield and Vancouver were booked as interstitial one-offs, and that a similar setlist was used for both Family Values and Countdown to Revolution, Vancouver likely saw the same.

While no recordings exist of Bakersfield, this fan-edited recording from February 2002 showcases an example of Joe’s DJ interlude, which fans have colloquially deemed the “Blow Your Mind” interlude for the beginning vocal sample from the 1980s hip-hop group Crash Crew.

The full-band arrangement of “My December” with Phoenix on cello likely played in Vancouver in 2001, from KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas later that year.

The band returned in February 2004 at the Pacific Coliseum during the Meteora world tour, as part of their full North American leg at the beginning of that year. At this point in the Meteora cycle, with four singles released from the album (with “Breaking the Habit” to come in June), the band had solidified the staple live songs of their newest material. A setlist report from a credible setlist-reporting Vancouverite reflects this, bringing with equal numbers of Hybrid Theory and Meteora studio tracks, plus the addition of the B-side “My December” and X-Ecutioners collaboration “It’s Goin’ Down.” For unknown reasons, it appears “P5hng Me A*wy” was dropped for this show—this happened on a couple other occasions during this North American run, including Nashville.

Similar to 2001, no recordings of the 2004 performance in Vancouver are circulated. This full show recording from a few weeks earlier in Toronto has nearly the same setlist, with the exception of “P5hng Me A*wy.”

Their final visit to Vancouver, over 13 years ago, was at Rogers Arena in September 2012, in support of band's fifth studio album, LIVING THINGS. Another Vancouver stop outside of a larger tour, this date was routed in the middle of the Honda Civic Tour, though was not part of that tour or billed as such. Starting with the mashup “TINFOIL” intro into “Faint,” the band worked through newly created and refreshed intros for old staples such as “With You” and “Somewhere I Belong,” and performed several of the electronic-heavy cuts from the album: “LOST IN THE ECHO,” “IN MY REMAINS,” “BURN IT DOWN,” “LIES GREED MISERY,” and “VICTIMIZED.” The night’s closer was “Bleed It Out,” featuring an extended bridge with the band’s tribute to the Beastie Boys classic “Sabotage.”

Fan video recording of “TINFOIL” and “Faint” opening Linkin Park’s 2012 performance in Vancouver.

Though the band was scheduled to finally return to Vancouver for the One More Light North American leg, it unfortunately took 13 years in the end. Their return to Vancouver comes near the very end of what is presumably their final tour leg in North America this album cycle, with the final date being in Seattle, Washington, three days later. On this final run up the western coast of the US and Canada, the band has decided to bring their last surprises out for North American crowds, most strikingly with their live debut of “Unshatter” in Los Angeles, but also with a few other smaller shifts.

After debuting “Unshatter” for fans in Los Angeles, Linkin Park immediately followed up by playing it a second time in San Jose.

The band’s most recent date in Portland, Oregon, continued this trend. For only the second time on this North American leg, “Keys to the Kingdom” returned to the setlist, with the last time being over a month ago for Montréal night two. Further representation for The Hunting Party came as Mike rapped the first verse of “Wastelands” as the transitional verse-of-the-night during his solo set. “Unshatter” has continued to stay steady since its live debut in Los Angeles, but moved into the mid-show Act 2 slot that the band originally used for “Up From the Bottom.” Interestingly, this also marked the first time “Unshatter,” “Up From the Bottom,” and “Let You Fade” were all performed at the same show, making Portland the first occasion where all three From Zero bonus tracks were played on the same night. Brad Delson was reportedly in the building as well to watch the Portland show, much like earlier in the summer when he was in attendance when the band played for I-Days in Milan.

Full recording of the band’s Portland performance from a seated section at Moda Center. The rare appearance of “Keys to the Kingdom” comes around 59:34!

For Vancouver, it will be seen if “Unshatter” sticks around to anchor Act 2; the song has only been dropped once since its debut so far. Outside of this, it’s reasonable to expect no further new or rare rotations, but shifts between the regular A-B-C sets have continued to puzzle fans scouring over the rotation slots. Linkin Park seems willing to forgo their formal structure and throw some soft curveballs to those following along. Perhaps the pre-show countdown timer will feature something from DJ Kid Koala, who is originally from Vancouver—Joe certainly respects him enough to include him on his TIDAL playlist promoting artists of Asian descent!

I'm so disappointed that they used a Carly Rae Jepsen song over Kid Koala :kappa:
