I've been watching this for a while on DownhillBattle.org. We knew the major labels (that is, ALL the major labels. Warner, EMI, Sony, etc.) have been paying the radio stations to play certain music, it just wasn't until recently that someone with the authority took notice and investigated. The idea of payola (that is, paying a radio station to only play certain music) was deemed illegal a long time ago, but through the use of a middle man (fake ads, people paid to call in for certain songs, etc.), the labels have been continuing payola for a while. I had heard that one of the labels were going to have to open up, so I'm pleased that it actually happened.
I read about this earlier, i'm not surprised at all really. I think it was a case of when it was going to come out rather than was it happening.
I thought 'payola' was legal up until I read that. It's part of manufacturing bands though, isn't it?
I read this yesterday and to tell you the truth, I'm really not that surprised. I think it's a shame though.
It was deemed illegal a very long time ago... the major labels just found loopholes to get past the law and keep doing what they wish.
