Does Gun Control make a country safer? Does it reduce amount of crimes commited? What's your views, opinions, regarding Gun Control? Would you feel much more confident and safer in your home if you owned a gun? Discuss. My view: I don't own one, but I do plan to. I believe that once you take away guns, it expands more, and more, until Guns are banned from citizens. Why? History has shown us ( okay, WWII is as much as I know ) that taking guns away from the people have lead to Very bad things. An example, WWII, Hitler banned guns from the people, and they willingly did so in guise of "Safer for everyone". Who had arms to stop the gestapo? No one. I am also proud of why we have the second amendment on the bill of rights! In any case, Let the discussion begin!
On Facebook there's a group named something along the lines of "Gun control makes guns disappear like prohibition makes alcohol disappear" which I believe to be the case here, in the UK. It depends on a state's mentality as a whole really. Here, people are so sheltered that as soon as something is forbidden to them they want it, whereas on the mainland it generally seems to be the case that most countries are more laid back about placing restrictions upon such things, not necessarily guns, which usually seems to work in their favour. I'm not saying making guns legal will get rid of them, of course.
Having a gun control law amended to the Constitution here in the United States would be a bad idea, maybe just as bad an idea as the Constitutional amendment prohibiting alcohol. People are always going to find a way around the law, and the people who are really desperate for the guns are going to find a way to get them. Law enforcement agencies can throw all the people in jail they want -- it won't stop the problem. I think there just needs to be stricter laws on guns, rather than taking them away (or banning them) outright. It's way too easy to get your hands on a gun here in the United States, and that's what needs to change. Then again, you're never going to stop the crazy kid from down the street from breaking into your dad's gun closet and shooting up the school, but if you've got the means to keep your guns locked up and safe and you're responsible, I don't see why stricter gun laws can't be put in place rather than just banning them outright, like I said.
Very well said. That's essentially what Australia has. You can still have a gun, it's just harder to obtain one, as well as certain types being outright banned. It seems to work, we've had one major postal style shoot up, compared to I don't know how many the US has had.
Putting stricter gun control laws would be much better than having a ban, I'll agree on that. Getting a gun requires a Form to be filled, type of gun, ect where you live, SSN, the works pretty much. Their not throwing people in jail, I think their just confiscating guns, using force if in possession and all. There's proof too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xeHclwb8Ng http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iexCMWsu0y8 With the 32 CFR 501.4 (Act, Bill, whatever), and in combination of a Gun Control / Ban. The outcome is sure to be terrible. ------------- But in what Will said, Banning guns is the wrong thing, whereas stricter laws would be in favor. I know there's many more of you all that have an opinion, lets hear it! EDIT: Daniel, I didn't know that ! I learned something new I don't think we've had a shoot up yet. =\. Are you allowed to obtain one for security of your home?
I didn't say police are putting people behind bars now, I said they could put all the people they want behind bars if they think it's going to stop people from having guns (assuming they're banned outright), but that it's not going to work. People would still find the means to get a hold of guns whether people are being thrown in jail to "set an example" or not. That's what happened during Prohibition, and that's what would happen now if guns were banned outright.
I live just south of San Francisco (home of the hippies!) and they have a gun ban ordnance. Its not working. Washington DC's gun ban just got bitch slapped by the Supreme Court and it had been failing too. DC has had one of the highest murder rates in the US for years. It astounds me that some people would favor a gun ban when it clearly does not work.
