Mike Murley is one of Canada's best (if not the best) jazz saxophonist in Canada, and among the best in the world. Playing in many different styles from funk to jazz standards to more contemporary jazz including world music. Growing up in Nova Scotia, he moved to Toronto were he has become famous on the jazz scene as a live performer and session player. He has won 9 Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy) and numerous other awards by the Jazz Report magazine. He recently won two awards at the National Jazz Awards for best jazz album ("Extra Time") and for saxophonist of the year. His resume keeps growing. His lyrical, communicative approach to playing caught my ear over a year ago and have become enamoured by his playing. I was also honoured enough to be taught by him at the IMC Jazz Camp last week, he's a really nice good-humoured guy that was really easy to talk to (he even joined in with our game of beach volleyball, haha). He also played some amazing live performances, including a duet with a great trumpet player named Walter White (another name to check out). I just have to say that both his playing and his attitude have led me to want to introduce him to any of you who happen to be jazz fans. His official website is www.mikemurley.com. There you can check out upcoming gigs, sound samples, latest news, and ways to contact him. I also highly recommend checking out his Metalwood CD's, which are more in the funk genre, but extremely kickass. (search at cduniverse.com for samples)
