10/22/06 Alright, so since things seem to be dying around here a lot faster than normal, I figured I'd post a little review of the MTV2$ Bill Tour stop that I went to last Sunday. As some of you may know and some of you may not know, this show is headlined by 30 Seconds to Mars who are supported by Head Automatica and Cobra Starship with some lesser known bands exchanging dates. I happened to catch a show that also included Men Women and Children as well as Envy on the Coast. First up was Men Women and Children whom I really enjoy. I love their CD and saw them last month on Head Automatica's Popaganda tour. They're very energetic live and get the audience into the music a lot. This time around, the vocalist's voice wasn't as prominent as last month, but I blame that on them having an opening slot and maybe it being a bigger venue than the previous show. Overall, I'd say they are a great opening band and they really get you excited for the next bands. 8/10 Next was Envy on the Coast, whom I've never heard before and didn't really interest me much. They didn't sound like a band doing anything different or too original. I don't know anything about them so I probably wouldn't be one to give an accurate review of them. Now is when it gets really good. Cobra Starship, a relatively new side project from Midtown's Gabe Saporta, landed themselves a pretty good slot on the tour. Having only one CD out, they didn't have much material to choose from but they definitely chose some of their best songs including Send My Love to the Dancefloor, I'll See You in Hell, Keep it Simple, The Church of Hot Addiction, It's Warmer in the Basement, and The Ballad of Big Poppa and Diamond Girl...and oh yeah, they closed with Bring It (Snake on a Plane) in which they brought up a fan from the front of the audience to rap the part that the MC from Gym Class Heroes usually does. The fan did pretty well and you could tell that the band was extremely personable and energetic. Plus, their Keytar player is hot...even my girlfriend said so (haha, check out some of their band pics if you wanna know what she looks like). 9/10 Nowww we get to Head Automatica. One of the most energetic live bands I have ever seen. On CD, they might seem like your everyday dance/rock fusion kind of band but live, Daryl manages to combine the harsh screams of Glassjaw with the music of Head Automatica and he is absolutely insane live. The band is a lot heavier when you see them live and they put a lot into their show. Fresh from kicking their drummer out of the band, the new drummer seemed to have no problems, knowing all the songs and singing backup quite well. For a band that wasn't headlining, they had a hefty set. Graduation Day, I Shot William H Macy, Laughing at You, Lying Through Your Teeth, Beating Heart Baby, The Razor, The Speed of a Yellow Bullet, Dance Party Plus, Curious, Scandalous, and God. Not in that order. 10/10 Last but not least was 30 Seconds to Mars. The place was packed for them and the crowd was going insane. Jared Leto came out with roses and started throwing them into the crowd and then they broke into A Beautiful Lie which was a pleasant surprise. I had never seen them live before and I didn't expect them to be too exciting but they put on an amazing live show and I would definitely see them again. and again. They mixed songs from their newer CD and their first CD quite well. They definitely deserve a 10/10. Overall: The show was amazing and I only paid 2$ for a ticket, so I definitely got more than my money's worth. If I hadn't forgotten my wallet in my car, I would have bought a CD so I could've met 30STM or at least Cobra Starship/Head Automatica. If the show is coming to a city near you, I recommend you go. GO.
That's so cool. A couple of my friends and I were going to drive to Columbus to see 30 Seconds to Mars but we decided not to. (For what ever reason, that tour didn't stop in Cleveland.) I've seen 30STM three or four times before and they get better every time. It's good to know they haven't lost their touch.
I really wish I was going to the Philadelphia date on Halloween. Unfortunately I have to work the next day, so I can't. Looks like I'm going to miss one hell of a show, which really sucks. I'm glad you had an amazing time.
