"The Other Half" Walking along these streets at night Shorn of my dignity and all of my pride Seeing for myself just how the other half lives Living in squalor and living in filth People saying they've got it rough And how they're low on money At least you've got some Some people will never know What's it like to have a job or a happy home People always sayin' they've gotta get a life A lot of people end theirs sleeping in the cold streets at night What you don't seem to realize is You could be living just like this Attempting a life in a slum that reeks of garbage A cardboard box for a bed, sleeping huddled up No one to comfort you and nothing to eat No running water or electricity No one to call your own and nothing to hide Tell me how would you feel if this was your life? If this was your life, you'd think different If this was your life, you'd look at things a whole new way If this was your life, you'd see things in a different light If this was your life, what would you say? Walking along these streets in the day Not much different, cause nothing has changed Same old stink of piss, shit, and filth Seeing for myself how the other half lives Seeing an old man on the corner begging for change Everyone ignores him, they think he's insane I see him shuffle off in defeat Nowhere to live, nothing to eat He has nothing but the clothes upon his back He's starving to death and it's everyone's fault Seeing young men hawk drugs upon the streets Selling death to little kids but no one does anything Hearing shots ring out in the alleyway Gangster thugs shooting each other up in the name of money Seeing girls sell themselves cheap Earning money on their backs for drugs they'll just need again Walking down the sidewalk, trash strewn about the street Air reeks of smog and it's not safe to breath I've tried telling you but you won't listen to me It's like preaching to a brick wall cause you're not listening Most of you are too wrapped in yourselves To figure out the message I'm telling you now Tell me, where would you hide If you knew this was your life? If this was your life, I hope you would change If this was your life, what you would think? Would you continue down the same old road Or would you start your life over again? You tune me out You turn away You don't hear my shouts You walk away You don't want to listen Cause you know it's true Just tell me What would you do... If this was your life, would you still be alive? If this was your life, would you break down and cry? If this was your life, what would you give To live in a normal home A quiet place on a quiet street Somewhere to call your own? Would you think your life is still shit When you've seen how the other half lives? Tell me... If this was your life, could you make a change? If this was your life, would you let it stay the same? I hope for your sake that you have a different point of view Cause there's lots of people out there who have it worse off than you I hope my words help you recognize these sins When you've heard all about how the other half lives
